Alternate Currents opens space for conversation, ideation, and action around national and international discussions in the arts across multiple platforms, both on- and off-line. Together, the Alternate Currents Blog, Discussion Series, and Working Group support critical, cross-disciplinary responses to systemic challenges closer to home.

In 2021, Amplify’s Alternate Currents Working Group will ten artists and culture workers to examine the future of for- and non-profit arts and cultural institutions, their role within the communities that support them, and the shared cultural logic from which colonialism and museums emerged.

Throughout the year, group members will work together to develop and refine project-based work, lead monthly discussions informed by critical readings, generate feedback, contribute editorial content to the AC Blog, and share their work during a year-end panel discussion and exhibition.

Alternate Currents Working Group members are also eligible for the Alternate Currents Grant. This $5,000 award is program specific and open only to ACWG members.

Curious to know more? Join us for a virtual Info Session on Thursday, November 12th at 6:00pm to learn more about program specifics, the application process, and jury selection. After registering, you'll receive confirmation with a link to join the session via Zoom.

Prior experience with project-based work is not a requirement to apply. Artists, educators, and culture workers in all disciplines with a strong interest in institutional critique, radical pedagogies, regenerative economies, community-informed organizing, Indigenous peoples’ sovereignty, emerging curatorial models, the degrowth movement, repatriation, reparations, museum archives and collections, decolonial research methodologies, radical hospitality, etc. are encouraged to apply.
