Dollhouse, Amplify’s next Generator Grant project organized by Natalie Hanson, Matthew Bailey, and Gayle Rocz, examines the dualities of online activism–the heightened awareness of a collective public consciousness and the potential harm media in infinitely reproducible formats can inflict. Blurring the lines between authentic engagement and performative activism, Dollhouse gestures toward the fun and failure of distilling the complexities of personhood in a post, story, or reel against the backdrop of an all-encompassing audience.
Opening at Generator Space on Friday, March 11th, the exhibition grounds itself in four performances, each of which will happen concurrently in physical and virtual space. Incorporating movement, video, and live-streaming to expose the incongruities of a life lived online, Dollhouse questions whether we can remedy the IRL problems of the world we live in while we’re hopelessly devoted to building a virtual one.
Viewings of Dollhouse during regular gallery hours will be by appointment and limited to small groups of 5 people or fewer at a time. Face masks are required.
